Chapter 1

The God of Mischief sat in his cell brooding. He shifted uncomfortably on the bed and shuffled his feet as he paced across the room, occupying himself despite his apparent boredom. He straightened at the sight of the God of Thunder in front of the glass.

"Here to visit me brother?
I do enjoy this comfy cell," Loki said wryly.

"You know the implications of your actions have brought you here Loki," Thor said matter-of-factly.

"Spare me your preaching Thor. I got enough of a tongue-lashing from that deceitful whelp Odin. You are just as condescending as your Father."

"Condescending? You stole the Tesseract and unleashed the Chitauri scourge upon Midgard.

"The mortals were made to be ruled. And I recall I was "born to be a king," Loki spat.

"Loki, the throne suits you ill. A true king doesn't instill fear upon his people."

"More meaningless preaching. The same old tune," Loki countered. "Tell me Odinson, is it so wrong to have what you desire?"

"No Loki," Thor replied with a sigh. "But there is a fine line between desire and cruel ambition."

"Cruel ambition. Such are the words spoken from a zealot."

Loki flashed Thor an icy glare, annoyed by his insipid sentiments. Thor stood in silence, a pained expression visible on his face. Not knowing what else to do, the demigod turned on his heel toward the exit.

Loki's lips curled into a sinister grin. From his peripheral vision he saw a figure emerge from the shadows. It was an exact duplicate of himself—or was it?

"Well done. You made that spiel sound believable. Or should I say I made it sound believable?"

The real Loki waved his hand and made the confined imposter vanish. He shimmered, bathing himself in iridescent light. The clothes he wore were replaced with the gold and leather regalia he normally wore. He felt naked without his scepter, but he'd worry about that later. His only concern now was his redemption.

Lelouch sat in his desk, indifferent with what his instructor had to say. He was half there, fixing his attention at a point in space. The rebellion against Brittania was far more important to him than a simple lesson. He reverted back to reality when Shirley called out to him.

"Lulu!" Shirley exclaimed. "Madame President called for an emergency meeting today. I thought I should let you know."

"Shirley, of course I'll be there."

"Well, you're always disappearing Lulu. And you never return my calls. I worry about you Lelouch."

"Shirley..." he began. His voice trailed off. Lelouch wasn't entirely oblivious to Shirley's feelings toward him; he never showed any particular interest. He remembered all the events leading up to him erasing her memorySweet, naïve Shirleyhe thought to himself.

"Lulu...?" Shirley asked. "I was thinking—

At that moment his phone rang.

"Hold that thought." He glanced at the name of his caller. "It's Suzaku," He noted, pressing the phone to his ear.

"Suzaku? Hi Suzaku!" Shirley said cheerfully.

"Shirley's there?" Suzaku queried. "Oh, I didn't realize this was a date."

"It's not a date, Suzaku. I'm just talking to her," Lelouch replied a little too defensively.

The words were like venom creeping into Shirley's veins. Not...a date?

"Shirley, I didn't mean—"

"It's okay Lulu," Shirley reassured, fighting back tears. "I know you didn't mean it like that."

She paused briefly before starting again.

"You shouldn't leave Suzaku waiting on the other end. Don't forget about the meeting! And no gambling!" Shirley insisted, forcing a smile.

She turned and walked the other way, still managing the "happy-go-lucky" persona. Lelouch watched her solemnly as she parted.

"Gambling?"

"I'll tell you later. What's this about, Suzaku?

"I'd rather tell you in person. Meet me at the promenade in front of Ashford Academy."

"I'll be right there." Lelouch flips his phone shut and darts for the rendezvous point.

Mother of God IconI've done it. After all my toil I've finally done it. And the cover looks nice too. It used to be on my old account as "Two Kings Clash" but I changed the title.
